Indie souls-like Mortal Shell is getting its first major update, adding quite a bit of new content to the game.

The Rotten Autummn update is completely free, and brings with it ten unique shades for the four different Shells available within the game, giving players more ways to customise their character. On top of that, there is a new mini-quest to take on, given to players by fan-favourite amphibian Gorf. Previously, speaking to Gorf would only activate and deactivate the game's music, but now the toad-in-the-hole will take centre stage in this new quest.

As part of the same update, Mortal Shell is also getting a new Photo Mode, giving players some really powerful tools to craft stunning images. Finally, the game is getting an entire alternate boss soundtrack courtesy of Greek death metal band Rotting Christ.

You can check out the new additions to the game in the trailer down below. We thoroughly enjoyed Mortal Shell when we reviewed it earlier this year, calling it "wonderfully rewarding" - you can read our our review here.

Mortal Shell is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

  • I really enjoyed Mortal Shell. Typically, I finished it 3 days ago, and have moved my character on to New Game Plus, but am not planning on another run just yet, so this update will, unfortunately, have to wait. I highly recommend this game though. Not as difficult as Dark Souls, but still enjoyable nonetheless...
  • I wish I had the motivation to try for the one-hit-kill run, it was a cool game. But I can't imagine doing some of those bosses perfectly, not worth the frustration. Maybe on Series X with the smaller load times.
  • I adore this game. I did end up 1000G'ing it, the no-shell run was... something. To be honest bosses were easier than running between everything. The crossbows in the Seat of Infinity, man. That was rough. I really enjoyed my time with this one, but not enough in this update to drag me back.
