Introduction:
Murdered: Soul Suspect is a third-person murder mystery game developed by the now-defunct Airtight Games and published by Square Enix.
“Murdered: Soul Suspect is a dark, detective thriller with a supernatural twist: solving your own murder from the afterlife. Play as Ronan O’Connor, a Salem police detective with a checkered past whose life is brought to an untimely end by a brutal killer. Trapped in a limbo world called Dusk, he is unable to find peace until he can bring his killer to justice. As Ronan, use powerful supernatural abilities to freely explore the shadowy afterlife. Unable to communicate with the detectives on his case, Ronan must read the minds of the living, influencing their thoughts and actions, and interrogate Salem’s dead to piece together the truth. The afterlife is not a safe place however, and his investigations are threatened by demonic spirits wanting to devour his soul.” – from xbox.com
Along the way, you will meet a girl named Joy, a medium who can communicate with the dead and may have knowledge of who the serial killer is. Work with her as you traverse to locations in the town of Salem, Massachusetts to uncover clues that led to your death and the deaths of others by the hands of the Bell Killer.
Walkthrough:
Only one playthrough is required for this game, provided you are obtaining collectibles along the way. The town of Salem acts like a hub world to the different locations you must visit. The game is very linear as you basically go from one location to another to investigate and try to find out who the Bell Killer is. You can wander around Salem to obtain the 61 collectibles in it, but other than that, the town is just used to get from one place to another.
You will visit 8 locations with a varying number of investigations at each. None are difficult as the clues are usually in close proximity to each other and relatively easy to piece together. Gathering collectibles at these locations, while not necessary, provide an overall back story to the game which makes it more interesting. Each location takes about 30-45 minutes if you are thorough.
Collectibles:
There are 25 achievements for 445 related to collectibles in this game, and they’re all missable. The collectibles in this game give background information to the locations and characters in the game as well as touching on the sorted history of Salem.
There are 8 locations to visit as well as the town of Salem and there are 242 total collectibles in the game. While at a location, be sure to obtain every collectible in it. This will eliminate backtracking later on and will save you time. This is particularly true of the Museum location. Once you enter the Judgment House you cannot return to the Museum at all. If you missed any collectibles in the Museum, you have no choice but to start a new game. With that exception, you still have access all other locations even after you exit the Judgment House, but be sure and triple check if you’ve missed anything before entering the Judgment House. Refer to “Collector All” for more information.
Refer to Maka’s Collectible Guide thread for video guides showing the locations of all the collectibles.
Mop Up:
Along with the 25 collectible and 16 story related achievements, there are four (4) missable side investigations you can do for another 80. They are “The Missing Body”, “Amnesia”, “Carnage” and “Scorned”. These can be knocked out easily early on in the game (after you finish with the Apartments).
Also, make sure that you have done the three (3) missable ghost-ability achievements for 30; “Discover Remove”, “Mindreader” and “Interrogator”. All of these can be done early on in the game as well.
Conclusion:
Murdered: Soul Suspect is an interesting story with a unique perspective. I found it quite enjoyable, albeit somewhat short, but it was a painless and easy 1000. If you like investigative murder mysteries with a supernatural twist, then this game is for you.
