Introduction:

Murdered: Soul Suspect is a third-person murder mystery game developed by the now-defunct Airtight Games and published by Square Enix.

Murdered: Soul Suspect is a dark, detective thriller with a supernatural twist: solving your own murder from the afterlife. Play as Ronan O’Connor, a Salem police detective with a checkered past whose life is brought to an untimely end by a brutal killer. Trapped in a limbo world called Dusk, he is unable to find peace until he can bring his killer to justice. As Ronan, use powerful supernatural abilities to freely explore the shadowy afterlife. Unable to communicate with the detectives on his case, Ronan must read the minds of the living, influencing their thoughts and actions, and interrogate Salem’s dead to piece together the truth. The afterlife is not a safe place however, and his investigations are threatened by demonic spirits wanting to devour his soul.” – from xbox.com

Along the way, you will meet a girl named Joy, a medium who can communicate with the dead and may have knowledge of who the serial killer is. Work with her as you traverse to locations in the town of Salem, Massachusetts to uncover clues that led to your death and the deaths of others by the hands of the Bell Killer.

Walkthrough:
Only one playthrough is required for this game, provided you are obtaining collectibles along the way. The town of Salem acts like a hub world to the different locations you must visit. The game is very linear as you basically go from one location to another to investigate and try to find out who the Bell Killer is. You can wander around Salem to obtain the 61 collectibles in it, but other than that, the town is just used to get from one place to another.

You will visit 8 locations with a varying number of investigations at each. None are difficult as the clues are usually in close proximity to each other and relatively easy to piece together. Gathering collectibles at these locations, while not necessary, provide an overall back story to the game which makes it more interesting. Each location takes about 30-45 minutes if you are thorough.

Collectibles:
There are 25 achievements for 445 related to collectibles in this game, and they’re all missable. The collectibles in this game give background information to the locations and characters in the game as well as touching on the sorted history of Salem.

There are 8 locations to visit as well as the town of Salem and there are 242 total collectibles in the game. While at a location, be sure to obtain every collectible in it. This will eliminate backtracking later on and will save you time. This is particularly true of the Museum location. Once you enter the Judgment House you cannot return to the Museum at all. If you missed any collectibles in the Museum, you have no choice but to start a new game. With that exception, you still have access all other locations even after you exit the Judgment House, but be sure and triple check if you’ve missed anything before entering the Judgment House. Refer to “Collector All” for more information.

Refer to Maka’s Collectible Guide thread for video guides showing the locations of all the collectibles.

Mop Up:
Along with the 25 collectible and 16 story related achievements, there are four (4) missable side investigations you can do for another 80. They are “The Missing Body”, “Amnesia”, “Carnage” and “Scorned”. These can be knocked out easily early on in the game (after you finish with the Apartments).

Also, make sure that you have done the three (3) missable ghost-ability achievements for 30; “Discover Remove”, “Mindreader” and “Interrogator”. All of these can be done early on in the game as well.

Conclusion:
Murdered: Soul Suspect is an interesting story with a unique perspective. I found it quite enjoyable, albeit somewhat short, but it was a painless and easy 1000. If you like investigative murder mysteries with a supernatural twist, then this game is for you.

Note: The Digital Strategy Maps that were given out if you pre-ordered the game are inaccurate. They often list collectibles in the wrong location and sometimes don’t list them at all. For your own sake, do not follow those maps.

This game has 242 items to collect throughout 8 locations with a total of 25 achievements for 445 related to the collectibles. They give backstories to the locations and characters who lived in the area in another time.

    • Apartments: 14 collectibles
    • Church: 20 collectibles
    • Salem Police Department (Police Station): 37 collectibles
    • Ashland Hills Cemetery: 28 collectibles
    • Lux Aeterna Psychiatric Hospital: 25 collectibles
    • Salem History Museum: 31 collectibles
    • Church (Upstairs): 2 collectibles
    • Town of Salem: 61 collectibles
    • Judgment House: 24 collectibles

Most of the collectibles in the game give off a yellow glow, so they aren’t too difficult to locate. You only need to walk up to it and press to collect it. For others, you only see fragment and must use Reveal (press ) to see it completely then collect it (press ). Then there are 23 Ghost Girl’s Messages which are writings on walls that shimmer lightly are only completely visible when you use Reveal.

The game saves your collectible progress immediately so you don’t have to worry about dying, restarting a checkpoint or your power going out. To check your progress, press .

It would be wise to collect everything in the location you are playing before solving the case and moving on to the next one to eliminate backtracking and extra play time. This is particularly true of the Museum as the area is locked off completely once you enter Judgment House, so make sure you get everything in the Museum before leaving. Since you return to the Salem streets when you complete Judgment House, you can enter all other locations except for the Museum. You will NOT be able to go back to the Museum and will have to start a new game if you miss any.

Before you enter Judgment House, your stats should read:

    • 14/14 of Ghost Abilities
    • 7/7 of My Life
    • 35/39 of Info About My Killer
    • 34/38 of Julia's Thoughts
    • 2/2 of Rex's Thoughts
    • 2/2 of Truth About Baxter
    • 5/6 of Profiler's Memories
    • 23/23 of Ghost Girl's Messages
    • 7/8 of Ghost Stories
      • 7/7 of “A Watery Grave” (Apartments)
      • 11/11 of “The Bell Tower Banshee” (Church)

      • 13/13 of “The Heirloom” (Cemetery)
      • 10/10 of “Man In The Box” (Hospital)
      • 15/15 of “Terror on the Tracks” (Museum)
      • 16/16 of “Eternal Flame” (Salem)
      • 0/0 of “Ashes to Ashes” (Judgment House)
    • 22/25 of Salem's History
    • 8/9 of Witch Trials History

Note: While the tracking of collectibles is reset if you start a new game, the save file still keeps your progress of what collectibles you’ve obtained and your achievements are still tracked. So, if you missed any, start a new game and progress to where the collectibles are, collect them, and if you’ve met the requirements, the achievement should unlock. But, you must have knowledge of which collectible you missed the first time; collecting any collectible in that set will not unlock the achievement. It may be difficult to remember which collectible you missed which is why it is recommended that you collect everything in a location before moving on.

Refer to Maka’s Collectible Guide thread for video guides showing the locations of all the collectibles.

  • Used Remove for the first time

    *MISSABLE*

This is only missable if you do not plan to obtain any collectibles, but, it is necessary to use this ability if you are.

After you’ve completed the apartments, your next location will be the Church. You will be standing in an alley behind the apartments with two police officers in front of you. Turn around and walk down the alley to the front of the apartment building. From there, cross the street and walk through the gap in the fence to the right of the 1st Salem Bank.

There are three opportunities to unlock this achievement in this alley (highlighted by yellow arrows in the image below); straight ahead behind the gallows, the barrels down the narrow alley to the right or the shack door past the fence behind the bank to the left. You can tell these are places to use this ability because they will vibrate every few seconds. Walk up to one of these and press to Remove the object and unlock the achievement.

  • Used Reveal for the first time

Story related and cannot be missed. As you are searching for clues in the investigation in Apartment 4A, you will need to Reveal two of the clues before analyzing them by pressing . Once you reveal the first clue, if it hasn’t already, the achievement will unlock.

However, your first opportunity to unlock this achievement is when you first enter the apartment building. From your start point, walk straight ahead and through the wall into a room with a billiards table. In the far left corner is a collectible needed for the achievement “A Watery Grave”. Walk up to the glowing blue item and press to Reveal it. The achievement will immediately unlock.

  • Possessed the cat

Story related and cannot be missed. The first opportunity to possess a cat comes in the Rectory in the Church. As you are walking around the Rectory, you will reveal a memory of the girl waiting for an elevator. To continue on with the story, you must follow her and find a way into the attic. Sitting next to the elevator in the kitchen doorway is a cat that you must possess to reach the attic. To possess it, press and the achievement will unlock.

  • Used Mind Read for the first time

    *MISSABLE*

This is technically missable but since you possess a lot of people in this game, the option to read someone’s mind will occur many times.

The first opportunity you can get this is when you start the investigation into your own murder on the street outside the apartments. There are police officers and other people standing around. At one end of the street, you will see a TV reporter and her camera man along with two other people standing behind the police line. All you need to do is press to possess one of them then to Mind Read to hear their thoughts. The achievement will unlock immediately after.

  • Used Poltergeist for the first time

Story related and cannot be missed. Your first story-related opportunity will be when you are chasing down the girl in the Church. You need to pass over the orange burning floor to continue on your way. When the short cut scene with the girl talking to the priest ends, you will notice a vacuum on the left. Press to turn it on to draw the attention of the priest. When he walks over, press to possess him so he can walk you over the burning floor. If it hasn’t already, the achievement will unlock when you turn on the vacuum.

You can get this much earlier in the game, though. The first time you can use this ability occurs when you are fleeing from the first demon you encounter in the apartments. As you are jumping from one ghost soul residue to another to hide from it, you end up in a room with a TV in it. When the demon leaves, exit the soul residue and walk up to the TV. Press to change the channel, unlocking the achievement.

  • Interrogated a ghost for the first time

    *MISSABLE*

There are only a handful of opportunities in the game where you can interrogate a ghost, so unless you approach every ghost in the game to see if you can question them, it will be difficult to find one. The first time is when you are on the 3rd floor of the apartments. When you arrive on that floor, there are two demons patrolling down the hallway in front of you. In the apartment to the immediate left are two people; a living man sitting on a bed and a ghost man lying in a bathtub. Walk up to the bathtub and press to talk to the man. This will open up a series of questions. When you ask your first question, the achievement will unlock.

The next opportunity is when you first enter the Church. Sitting in the back row on the right side facing the altar is a ghost man and a living woman. Press to speak to the ghost and it will open up a series of questions. Ask your first question and, if it hasn’t already, the achievement will unlock.

  • Defeated a demon

Story related and cannon be missed. As you are walking around the Apartments, you come to South Stairwell 2F.
