Introduction:
Welcome to King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match, an SNK arcade title with all of the familiar fighters from the series (and from multiple other fighting games) pooled together, along with some new faces. This game comes with a story mode, an endless mode, challenge mode, and online versus mode, all of which will be required to get the completion. Thankfully, this game features the ability to program macros for your characters, meaning you can set an entire combo to the press of a single button. You can also manipulate game settings in your favor, making the majority of this completion very easy. The only difficulty comes in Challenge Mode, where there are pre-set challenges to complete. Many are very easy with the use of macros, but a few require some amount of skill. Far less than your average fighting game though, making this a pretty simple completion for a fighting game. Let's get started.
Macros Explained:
The most important part of this guide is macros, so this section will explain what they are, how they work, and how to set them up, since they are what makes this game a 3/10 in difficulty. Without them, it'd easily be an 8/10 or more. Macros are programmed strings of inputs that are all assigned to the press of a single button. With the default controller layout, that button is . So whenever you set up a macro and save it (called "Commands" in this game), you can press to use that macro. Also note that when you create a macro, you create it for a specific character and save it for that character. This means that if you pick, for example, Ralf, and set up a macro for him and save it, you can then choose another character, set up an entirely different macro for them and save it, and your macro for Ralf won't be overwritten. You can only have one macro per character though.
Now on to how to create a macro. From the main menu, select Practice Mode. Choose the character you want to set up a macro for, and choose any opponent. Once done, you'll be put at the Practice Mode menu. Scroll down and choose Command from the menu. This is where you can set up your macros. Choose Edit from this new menu. This is where you can manually select the inputs you want. There will always already be a macro there, but since it isn't the one you want, press repeatedly to delete all the inputs and clear it out. Now you can simply use the keys on the screen to select the buttons you want. For example, take this macro: D, DR, R, D, DR, S=(R, LK), N[40]. This is the format I have used for macros in all of the guide and challenges. To input this, select the Down arrow, then select the diagonally down-right arrow, then the Right arrow, then the Down arrow again, diagonally down-right arrow again, and then select the S button. Doing so brings up a little inset with 5 blank spaces. The first blank space is where you can select a direction, and the other four blanks are where you can select up to four different attack buttons. So for this example macro above, set the first blank to the Right arrow, and the second blank to the button that says LK. These are toggled by pressing up and down on . After setting up the S button, the input is the N symbol in the middle of the arrows. You'll notice the macro above has [40] after the N. The default number in brackets is always 1, so I don't bother writing that. To change the value in brackets for an input, press and then use to increase the number to whatever you want it set at. When you're done, accept your macro and then choose to Exit Game. It will ask you if you want to change your command. Choose yes to save your macro, and you're all set.
Story Mode:
One full and one partial playthrough will make all achievements in this mode very easy to obtain. Follow the solution in the The King of Fighters (20G) achievement solution for how to very quickly and easily beat Team Play, unlocking CHAMPION (10G) and The King of Fighters (20G) as well as Omega Rugal as a playable character. Next, refer to Unnamed Challenger (15G) for a relatively easy way to unlock this last achievement in this mode. A little skill will be required for this achievement, but thankfully you're able to turn the difficulty all the way down, your defense all the way up, and your opponent's all the way down, making it pretty easy even with minimal skill. With those three achievements done, that finishes up Team Play mode.
Endless Mode:
After completing The King of Fighters (20G) and unlocking Omega Rugal, you're ready for Endless Mode, which will now be a piece of cake with Omega Rugal. Refer to Veteran Fighter (30G) for a macro to set up for Omega Rugal that'll allow you to breeze through all 65 opponents in Endless Mode and unlock all three achievements tied to this mode.
Challenge Mode:
This is the toughest part of the game and the only portion that presents any real challenge for this completion. Thankfully, almost all of the challenges can very easily be completed with macros. Some of them do require some skill and/or actually fighting enemies, to an extent. Refer to the Challenger (20G) achievement solution for detail on every challenge.
Grinding and Mop Up:
After finishing all 30 normal challenges in Challenge Mode, you'll unlock Expert Challenge Mode. Completing all 20 Expert Challenges would be a massive pain and huge task, all to unlock the final unlockable character, Nightmare Geese. There is thankfully a much faster and less stressful way. Refer to Complete (20G) for how to do this. At some point, you can also get Raging Throw (15G) and Mighty Blow (20G) whenever you want.
Multiplayer:
Unsurprisingly, the online multiplayer community is dead for this game. The only way to get the achievements in it is to find a boosting partner. Post for one HERE. It'll take around 20 minutes per person to unlock the two online achievements with a boosting partner.
Conclusion:
With the use of macros, this game becomes far easier than it otherwise would be, even for those who are terrible at fighting games. It'll require a bit of work, and can get a little tedious meticulously typing in all of the required macros, but it beats all the frustration you'd face otherwise if you didn't have them. If you can make it through the 30 challenges and manage to find a boosting partner for the online achievements, this should be a pretty fast and easy completion.
